If you build it, they will come. This statement has been used manytimes

for new ventures, projects and locations. The NY Yankeesand the NY Mets

have been following that statement this year. The
same applies for the newest transportation association in the New
York area: The Luxury Base Operators Association (LBOA).

We at the Luxury Base Operators Association (LBOA) were proud
to have been part of an important first step that brought together the
competing segments of our local industry for the greater good of everyone.
Our rallying cry for this unprecedented event was the New TLC
Rules, which began to go into effect in July and August.

You won. Or U-1… as the section of the New York State 2009

budget is so aptly titled, implemented a sales tax on June 1st

charging 4% from the State and approximately another 4% from
whatever municipality you operate from.

It was with great interest last summer that I learned of the proposed
formation of the Luxury Base Operators Association (LBOA). It
seemed to me to be a concept whose time had come. In fact, I thought
it was overdue. For years I had felt that the Luxury Bases were severely
handicapped because they had no forum for sharing information
and opinions, and no representation that could effectively present that
information to the various state and local regulatory agencies that effectively
controlled their livelihoods.

We all know that the economy is in bad shape. We don’t need the President or the TV pundits to tell
us that we have serious problems. We in the travel industry feel the downturn in a very pronounced way. Customers are not flying, so they aren’t using our services to goto the Airport. Major corporate clients have laid off thousands of employees. We need to find ways to survive. One of the most significant ways of strengthening your company is by aligning yourself with other people suffering from the same problems as you – people like members of the Luxury Base Operators Association. We are feeling the pinch, just

What Do We Do in these Troubled Times?

"All too often, we are quick to assume that there is no way for
one person to have an affect on “the big issues” – but I would like
to respectfully disagree with that stance and use this column to
confront problems that we are facing in our industry by offering alternative
solutions. It doesn’t matter how long you have been in
the industry; what’s important is whether you are willing to confront
these issues with an open mind."

"New Kid on the Block.  We Don't Think So!

When a new association is formed in our
industry, I think that people have a tendency
to write them off as inexperienced. While the
Luxury Base Operators Association (LBOA)
may be a new group, you have to remember
that our members (including our officers and
board) have a great deal of experience and a
share a vast base of knowledge."

The Road Forward

"In an economy whose engine is sputtering, with
wheels that seem to be grinding to a halt, we sit and listen
as economists and various pundits try to condense
and explain to us the causes of this current crisis and
what it really means to us. They speak of recession, depression
and paradigm shifts, and throw statistics and
numbers at us. But this all just seem to add to the confusion,
never providing any real answers."
